Right to Know Day around the world - Access Info Europe

Description: On Right to Know Day 2006, Access Info Europe is launching a number of activities to promote the Right to Information in Europe. These and other developments will be presented throughout the coming months on the new Access Info Europe website: http://www.access-info.org, which has information about the right to information in three languages, English, Spanish and French.

Movement for a Treaty on Access to Information: in support of the Council of Europe treaty on Access to Official Documents, and with the call that the treaty require full access to information from all branches of government, the Movement for a Treaty on Access to Information aims to engage civil society groups, journalists and political parties across Europe in working to ensure that the treaty sets the highest standards and that it has a fully-funded monitoring mechanism. The Movement for a Treaty will be presented to journalists at events in London, on 28 September 2006, at the Foreign Press Association (http://www.foreign-press.org.uk/) and in Copenhagen on 2 October (http://www.dj-kreds1.dk/offkonf.pdf)

Launch in Spain of the “Coalicion Pro Acceso” formed by Access Info Europe., Sustentia and other CSOs. The Coalicion is calling for adoption of a full Spanish access to information law (currently there are only administrative provisions). See Spanish section of the Access Info website (La Portada).

The Campaign “Recognize the Right!” is an initiative to promote recognition of the right of access to information and to set at least minimum standards in countries of Europe that don’t have access to information laws or lack full provisions. These include Spain, Italy and Greece which currently have only administrative provisions. The Coalicion Pro Access is part of this campaigning work. This project will also target problematic provisions of other European access to information laws that in any way restrict access to information.

Fundraising for Access Info: created entirely thanks to the pro bono efforts of its founder members, Access Info Europe is now seeking funds for its activities to promote the Right to Information in Europe.
