On International Right to Know Day, Sept. 28, people around the globe celebrate their right to know what their governments are doing. This right is not something granted by governments, but a basic human right — and one that must be defended even in the most progressive regimes. To mark the occasion, Freedom of Information advocates and others host public forums, publish scholarly articles and find myriad ways to educate the public about what it has a right to see and how to get it. In some nations, this means explaining a new law; in others it could involve finding ways to bring old rules up to date with new technology. Among the many events scheduled on and around the eighth annual International Right to Know Day 2010 are several public symposia with the public and government officials, including more than 60 events across Mexico and over 20 in Canada; programs throughout Africa focusing on several new FOI laws there; and events throughout Europe including a program in Brussels organized by the European Union ombudsman.
