Journalists Against Corruption celebrates "Right to Know Day"

In anticipation of Right to Know Day, Journalists Against Corruption or PFC (Periodistas Frente a la Corrupcion, in Spanish) has or will realize the following activities:

A region wide press release honoring Right to Know Day that also announces updates to the Freedom of Informaton portal on the PFC website to help journalists prepare and disseminate reports in their countries about Right to Know Day and the importance of the FOI.

Updating this portal everyday to provide the region's most complete reference about Latin American FOI initiatives and actors; legislative proposals and laws that have been passed; and obstacles, non-compliance and other factors that have undermined the passage of FOI laws and their application. The portal is used by legislators and others as a reference to develop FOI laws and to discuss strategies for their implementation to avoid bad experiences from lessons in other Latin American countries. http://probidad.org/regional/derinfo/

A seminar, meetings with civil society organizations, journalists and policy makers, and other actions in Honduras to promote the adoption of an access to information law in that country. These initiatives have been made possible through funding and support received from the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX), in which PFC is a member.

In El Salvador, PFC activities are coordinated by the non-profit Probidad for El Salvador (PES). During September, PES is continuing its campaign to pressure FOI legislation vis a vis television interviews; meetings with legislators, mayors and community groups; an FOI workshop organized with Transparency International; and presenting a law suit against the country's general accounting office (Court of Accounts) for restricting access to auditing reports that, according to law, are public. Among other efforts, PES will circulate a press release through its extensive local email network recognizing Right to Know Day, highlighting the importance of citizen participation in advocating on behalf of enhanced access to public information.

Since it emerged in 2000, PFC has served all Spanish speaking countries in Latin America except Cuba. PFC is a program of the regional non-profit PROBIDAD, located in El Salvador, that promotes anti-corruption and free press causes. In light of Right to Know Day, PROBIDAD dedicated an edition of its regional journal Revista Probidad to the discussion of the need for FOI legislation, FOI best practices and worst experiences, and strategies to assure not only the adopton of FOI laws but also their application.
